Dr. Afroz Taj
Dr. Taj is Professor of South Asian
culture, literature, and media in the Department of Asian Studies at the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (USA) where he is the Director of the
South Asia Section.
Dr. Taj’s research interests include Urdu
poetry and poetics, South Asian theater, cinema, and media. He
is the author several books including The Court of Indar and the Rebirth of
North Indian Drama (2006) and Urdu Through Hindi (1997) as well as
many ghazals, geet, dohe, and short stories.
His two current book projects concern the Parsi Urdu Theater and the
Urdu magazine “Shama.”
After studying at Aligarh Muslim University
and Jawaharlal Nehru University, Afroz Taj came to the United States in 1981 to
continue his studies. In 1995 Afroz Taj
was recruited by the University of North Carolina to establish a pioneering
program of teaching Hindi-Urdu on multiple campuses through distance education
using live, interactive videoconferencing. In 1999 he received a grant of one
million dollars from the U.S. Department of Education to create the popular online
language courses “A Door Into Hindi” and “Darvazah: A Door Into Urdu.” Dr. Taj also
serves as director of the UNC Summer in India Study Abroad Program which has
been running continuously for the past 20 years.
